Women stand up against the hijacking of the Arab Spring

Half of Arab society is screaming at the other half: “I am just as good as you are!” The 'Uprising of women in the Arab world’ has launched a Facebook campaign. It’s urging Arab women to rise up against what they call ‘male dictatorship’ in order to complete the Arab spring.

Students, teenagers and mothers quickly began posting their pictures on the Facebook page. Each photo features a participant, carrying a poster explaining why she supports the uprising. Or he, because large numbers of young Arab men are also backing the campaign.

Dictators in their houses

The campaign ‘I am with the uprising of women in the Arab world’ started in early October.  In a press release, the four women who launched the campaign stated they wanted “to remind everyone that the revolutions were aimed at dignity, social justice and freedom, and that these three goals can never be realised if women are absent from the public sphere”. They added, "we have to continue the revolution to oust male chauvinism that turns every man into a dictator over his wife, daughter, sister, and even mother”.

Many activists and bloggers have welcomed the campaign. In less than three weeks, the number of 'likes' that the page has attracted has increased to over forty thousand.

Women from East to West

The Facebook page full of pictures reflects the problems that women face in various Arab societies, ranging from sexual harassment to women’s inability to pass their nationality on to their children.

“I am with the uprising of women in the Arab world,” writes a Syrian mother, “because I have been a Syrian all my life, but my children are Russian because that’s my husband’s nationality”.

Protesting against the obligation to cover her face, a Saudi girl held up a paper in front of her face: “I’m in favour of the campaign because I cannot take a picture of my own face”.

My body is mine

“Please look at our brains, not our bodies”, say several participants. “I’ll back the uprising of women in the Arab world until men stop looking at my body and start understanding my thoughts”, writes one woman. Another says, “women are still prisoners of their virginity”.

A Syrian girl, for her part, writes: “My body is mine. It doesn’t belong to the liberals whose only aim is to undress it, nor to the radicals whose only aim is to cover it”.

Rape in the name of marriage

Voices are also being raised, opposing the use of religious laws against women. “Islam is my dignity”, says a girl from Sudan. “I won't accept to be insulted or raped in its name.”

One of the main complaints on the page is Islamic legislation allowing marriage of under-age girls. “Yemeni law allows me to be raped if I am fully physically developed, even though I am still a kid”, says one Yemeni woman. “They call that marriage.” A male compatriot says he is “tired of fatwas and a male-dominated society that condones the marriage of children”.

Work twice as much

Another hot topic is equal rights in society and the workplace. “I don't want to work twice as hard as my brother and earn half as much”, says a girl from Sudan.

People are also expressing their concerns about developments in Tunisia: “the Personal Status Code is in danger”, writes one young man, “but it is the best legal framework for women in the Arab world.”

Look beyond appearances

The pictures of the women on the 'Uprising of women in the Arab world' page have also been criticised. Some zealous visitors have launched personal attacks and written obscenities.

The moderators of the page have responded forcefully: “When we put up a picture of a veiled woman, no one objects to her appearance. But when we post the picture of a woman who doesn’t cover herself, it is immediately plastered with comments claiming that her appearance is weakening the cause!”

They are particularly sorry to see that some of these comments come from women themselves. “This just goes to prove that women can do other women an injustice without even being aware of it.”

People are continuing to post new pictures in support of the uprising. According to Lebanese artist and activist Joumana Hada, “that’s because women deserve more and they are capable of more”.

Boy Scouts release files on suspected child sex abusers

The Boy Scouts of America has disclosed 14,500 pages of secret documents on men suspected of sexually abusing children, after a lengthy legal battle.

The Oregon Supreme Court ordered the files from 1959 to 1985 to be released, despite the Boy Scouts' objections.

The Associated Press reports that the dossier shows how scout leaders, police, prosecutors and mayors hushed up numerous allegations of abuse.

The organisation has said it did all it could to protect boys from abuse.

The Boy Scouts has pledged to re-examine the files and report offenders who were not investigated at the time.

Psychiatric treatment

The organisation launched a legal battle to keep the documents sealed, but the Oregon Supreme Court ruled in June they could be made public with the victims' names omitted.

Many of the files unsealed on Thursday have been written about before, but this is the first time those from 1959 to 1971 have been disclosed.

Kelly Clark, a lawyer in the city of Portland, released the files.

He has been in possession of them since winning a case in April 2010 against the Boy Scouts on behalf of a man who was molested in the 1980s by an assistant scoutmaster already known to have abused other boys.

A court awarded the plaintiff nearly $20m (£12.4m).

Files on 1,200 suspected abusers were used in evidence in that case.

"You do not keep secrets hidden about dangers to children," Mr Clark told a news conference in Portland on Thursday.

The Associated Press says the documents show that in many instances the files succeeded in keeping paedophiles out of Scouting, but many times they did not.

According to a recently released report from the Boy Scouts, police were notified in two-thirds of alleged abuse cases from 1965-1985.

But in many cases, although suspected and confirmed abusers were urged to resign, the authorities were never told.

In some cases, offenders were allowed to re-join the youth group after psychiatric treatment.

But some of those men went on to molest more boys, Boy Scout officials and lawyers for plaintiffs have said.

Correspondents say the release of the files could lead to legal action against the Boy Scouts.

On Wednesday evening, Wayne Perry, President of Boy Scouts for America, conceded its response to the incidents had been "plainly insufficient, inappropriate and wrong," Reuters news agency reported.

Soon after the association was founded in 1910 in Irving, Texas, the Boy Scouts began to keep records tracking abusers.

Files released in 1991 - spanning incidents from 1971 to 1991 - also showed a pattern of failure to report sexual abuse to the police, even when a confession had been made.

A US law defining marriage as being only between one man and one woman has been struck down by a second appeal court, this time in New York.

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2 to 1 that the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma) is unconstitutional.

The act denies legally married gay couples federal benefits including the ability to file joint tax returns.

A Boston court unanimously ruled against Doma in May. The Supreme Court is expected to consider it next year.

Only it can issue final rulings on whether laws passed by the US Congress are constitutional or not.

In 2011, President Barack Obama instructed the Department of Justice not to defend the law, and earlier this year he announced that he supported the right of gays to marry.

Equal protection clause

The New York ruling came in a case brought by Edith Windsor, who sued the government in 2010 after being told to pay $363,053 (£224,940) in federal estate tax after her wife died.

The couple had been partners for 44 years and had married in Canada in 2007.

The majority opinion, written by Judge Dennis Jacobs, said that Doma's "classification of same-sex spouses was not substantially related to an important government interest" and therefore violated the equal protection clause of the US Constitution.

Doma touches more than 1,000 federal laws, Judge Jacobs said, arguing that "homosexuals are not in a position to adequately protect themselves from the discriminatory wishes of the majoritarian public".

He also rejected arguments that the definition of marriage was traditional.

"Even if preserving tradition were in itself an important goal, Doma is not a means to achieve it."

In his dissent, Judge Chester Straub said that the government could only change its understanding of marriage if the American people instructed them to do so through legislation.

"Courts should not intervene where there is a robust political debate because doing so poisons the political well, imposing a destructive anti-majoritarian constitutional ruling on a vigorous debate," he said.

The decision came less than a month after the court heard arguments on 27 September.

The Supreme Court is expected to take up a case on Doma as well as an ongoing legal wrangle over a gay marriage ban in the state of California, a law known as Proposition 8.

Uruguay has become the second country in Latin America, after communist Cuba, to legalise abortion for all women.

With a 17-14 majority, the Uruguayan Senate approved legislation that allows women to have an abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The measure has divided opinion in the predominantly Roman Catholic country.

Pro- and anti-abortion campaigners have criticised the compromise that sealed the deal expected to be signed into law by left-wing President Jose Mujica.

The proposal had already been approved by the lower house of Congress and the Senate, but politicians from both sides of the debate agreed further changes and held another vote.

Abortions versus adoptions

Pro-abortion campaigners say many lives will be saved with the end of clandestine, high-risk terminations.

Roman Catholic country

"With this law, we are joining the ranks of developed countries that have largely adopted a stance to liberalise, recognising the failure of criminal laws to avoid abortions," said government Senator Luis Gallo.

Pro-abortion campaigners reject changes to the proposal that forces women to justify before a panel of experts why they wish a termination.

After that, they will need to wait for several days - a period of reflection - before being able to state their final decision.

Anti-abortion politicians said the government should have adopted measures to encourage adoptions, rather than change the law.

"Abortion is not a medical act. It does not seek to protect and preserve a patient's health," said opposition Senator Alfredo Solari.

Abortion is legal and available on request in Cuba.

Abortion is also allowed up to the 12th week of pregnancy in many Mexican states and in the area of the capital, Mexico City.

In other Latin American countries, it is only allowed in cases of rape or health risk for the woman.

It hasn't taken its first breath. The DNA hasn't measured the energy of the planet yet, since it is contained. Did you realize that? Inside the womb is a perfect child. The child's DNA has all the attributes of the Akash and also the parent, but it's different in a way you have not been told. The DNA is 100% as designed.

Officials suppress UFO, nuclear site ties

Editor, the Tribune: In September 2010, six former U.S. Air Force officers, ranging in rank from first lieutenant to full colonel, testified at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., regarding UFO-related observations and operational "shutdowns" of U.S. nuclear weapons sites in this country and abroad.

A few days ago, another former Air Force Minuteman nuclear missile launch officer, Capt. David Schindele, cited a 1966 UFO incursion at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., at which time he was warned by a superior officer never to speak of the incident again.

Capt. Schindele's testimony brings to mind the statement by the late U.S. astronaut Gordon Cooper, who said of UFOs: "For many years I have lived with a secret, in a secrecy imposed on all specialists in astronautics. I can now reveal that every day, in the U.S.A., our radar instruments capture objects of form and composition unknown to us. And there are thousands of witness reports and a quantity of documents to prove this, but nobody wants to make them public."

The pressing question concerning this insidious secrecy is: Will this silence continue to be tolerated by the press, government officials and otherwise concerned citizens?

Five Royal Marines have been charged with murder over the death of an insurgent in Afghanistan in 2011.

Seven marines were arrested on 11 October by the Royal Military police. Two more were later arrested, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Four have been released without charge pending further inquiries, the Ministry of Defence said.

The incident took place in Helmand province last year, but it is thought investigators only began an inquiry in recent weeks.

An MoD spokesman said: "The Royal Military police has referred the cases of the remaining five Royal Marines to the independent Service Prosecuting Authority.

"Following direction from the SPA these marines have now been charged with murder and they remain in custody pending court proceedings.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further on this ongoing investigation," the spokesman added.

The soldiers, believed to be members of 3 Commando Brigade, were arrested in connection with an incident described as "an engagement with an insurgent", with no civilians involved.

During a six-month tour of duty in 2010, which lasted from April to October, seven servicemen from 3 Commando Brigade were killed in action, all from 42 Commando. The tour, Operation Herrick 14, was the unit's fourth and saw the force score notable successes in capturing explosives from the Taliban.

The rules of engagement, largely derived from the Geneva conventions, dictate under what circumstances British troops are allowed to open fire, whether to prevent an attack by the enemy or in direct contact.

The arrests are thought to be the first time UK servicemen have been held on suspicion of such charges during the conflict in Afghanistan.

A Territorial Army soldier was investigated by military officials after shooting dead a suspected Taliban bomber in the Nahr-e-Saraj area of central Helmand in the summer of 2010.

Senior officers believed the man may have been an innocent farmer. But after an 18-month inquiry no charges were brought against Fusilier Duane Knott, who said he had no regrets over his action.

Lending institutions deemphasize euro in meeting

The euro appears to no longer be the global financial scapegoat, as the atmospere at the end of the annual meeting of the IMF and Worldbank indicated. Differing paths for stability and growth were emphasized instead.

What finance ministers from around the world put into their final communique after the annual meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Tokyo on Saturday (September 10, 2012) reads initially like dozens of other statements that have come from leaders' meetings.

"We need to act decisively to break negative feedback loops and restore the global economy to a path of strong, sustainable and balanced growth," the communique read.

But a sentence about the eurozone was new to many readers accustomed to reading about the ongoing debt crisis.

"In the euro area, significant progress has been made," the leaders wrote while welcoming a decision by the European Central Bank to buy bonds, as well as the launch of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM). Still, the ministers added, "further steps are necessary."

No panacea 

IMF Director Lagarde said there's
no patent recipe for success

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said that there's a better political base now for such action than six months ago. The key at this point would be to consolidate budgets over the mid- and long-term while enacting structural reforms to promote competitiveness and growth, she added.

"But the pace and type of measures obviously need to be calibrated on a country-by-country basis ... it cannot be one-size-fits-all," said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble expressed satisfaction that the European debt crisis was no longer the major topic of discussion. "Everyone agreed that Europe is on the right path," he said.

"Everyone has a load to carry," Schäuble added, referring to emerging as well as industrialized countries. While the United States approaches its legal debt ceiling, emerging nations need to find way of stabilizing growth, according to Schäuble.

Schäuble said some nations were working toward reforming their institutions and pursuing sustainable growth while "others sit there and put the blame for falling growth rates on others." He said there was agreement with emerging countries that regulation of the banking sector would be key accomplishment, allowing politicians to refocus on the actual economic situation rather than being forced to manage the excesses of a financial sector concerned mainly with itself.

Schäuble did not comment on an idea floated by ECB board member Jörg Asmussen of allowing Greece to use bailout money to buy back old bonds as a way to reduce its soverign debt. The Finance Ministry calculated the costs of such a play a year ago and concluded that it could reduce Greek debt by 20 billion euros ($26 billion).

"We have to look at every possibility," Schäuble said. "But the plan for Greece has to continue, otherwise we will appear unreliable. We will wait for the troika's report. Until then people can come up with any ideas they can imagine. But finance ministers will not comment on them."

Today, their monetary system is more valuable than yours! Where am I going with this? Listen - here is an attribute, a postulate, an axiom of this new earth energy: Separatism kills. Unity is the survival of humanity. You will start putting things together and not taking them apart. And the more you put them together, the more you will unify. Then slowly you'll realize that the goal is to put things together, not tear them apart. What has the European Union created? I'll tell you. It isn't the Euro. It has created a group of countries that will never go to war with each other again! They can't. They trade with each other. Think about it. That's what we're talking about. …“

Europe

Let's talk about Europe - Eastern and Western Europe. Look at the history. I want you to look at the history of the Europeans. What do you know about them? What did you study in school about them, American? You had to learn all those dates and facts. You sit in a country that's barely 200 years old and you had to memorize all the battles and all those conquerors and all those army specifics for hundreds of years! Fourteen hundreds, 1300s - all the way to the present century they seemed to be conquering each other on a regular basis. They warred with each other like the tides of the ocean, constant and predictable. When they got tired of that, they conquered other continents. The small country of Spain alone is responsible for conquering all of South America, middle America and well up into North America. Millions today are speaking their language who never did before they arrived.

The armies of Napoleon spread across parts of Europe like water flowing in a river, conquering everything in its path. There are some cities today in Europe that still don't know which country they belong to! This is because their borders kept changing so often! Now, that's history. I want you to look at it carefully. Still, there would be those who say, "This is just what men do. They create borders and cultures and they go to war. That's Human nature."

Fifty years ago, this new energy started to arrive. Oh, the alignments go slow, dear Human Being, but it was here. It was starting; it was beginning. Fifty years ago, something happened in Europe and you didn't hear much about it back then. Some very clear thinkers got together after World War II and said, "If we don't do something different and out of the box of today's thinking, it's all going to happen again because this is what we do. Men make war." Even the young country called America was involved in war. America itself almost split apart before that, because that's what men do. They split good things apart. It was obvious to these wise men that they could try something, something that might work - a uniting instead of separation. And so they formed an idea. Let me tell you what it was.

They said to themselves, "What if we could get as many countries as we can to agree to become a collection of 'country states'? If we start this now and go at it slowly, we could eventually have a system where we would trade together to the point where the borders come down, no checkpoints and no passports. All these cultures and former enemy countries would all trade evenly together, and for that to happen we might even have a common currency. Look at the United States, for this is how it works there. Europe would never go to war with itself again. It couldn't, since it would be allied financially."

Of course, they were laughed at! Everyone who heard it said it couldn't' be done and that there were just too many issues to solve. Those who objected said, "No, no, no. That's not what we do. We have too many different cultures. There's some with strong currencies, there's some with weak currencies. There are too many objections. Imagine going from one country to another without being inspected at the border? That won't work. Who are you to suggest something of this nature?" And the forward thinkers said, "We are unifiers. And we think it's a good idea so we will have strength and will never war again." That was two generations ago, 50 years.

Today, you have the European Union of States. There are more all the time, way past the original number of countries. Some are "standing in line" to be accepted! The borders are gone and the checkpoints are missing and the currency called the Euro is the strongest currency on Earth - stronger even than yours [the USA]. Now, let me tell you what did that. It's a consciousness shift that even 50 years ago was developing. Through two generations, it slowly allowed for free thinkers to unify things that had never been unified before. The result? These countries will never conquer each other again, because "history" ended at that moment. They started a new paradigm for Europe and one that has no historic profile known to man. The old history of the area is gone, and it will not repeat itself.

Those in the old Eastern Bloc of Europe, where there is still to this day very little unity, will still say, "History will again repeat itself. We are victims of it. It's only a matter of time." But not all of them feel this way. There are some who are starting to feel a unity of spirituality within their own cultures that they were never allowed to speak of before. So they are free thinking, out of the box of the old paradigm. It's new.

There are those who are standing on podiums and in pulpits and are proclaiming, "History is ended. It's the end of suffering. It's the end of dictatorships. It's the end of those who would put us in a low place. Instead, it's the beginning of discovering who we are." European Union wins Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has unanimously awarded the European Union the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts for peace, reconciliation, and democracy over the past six decades.

Friday's announcement was considered a surprise to some, but a Norwegian broadcaster had reported the announcement an hour before it was officially made.

Making the announcement in Oslo, the head of the Nobel Committee, Thorbjorn Jagland, said the European Union's efforts toward "the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe" since the end of World War II had earned the 27-nation bloc the prize.

Jagland highlighted the reconciliation and continued good relationship between Germany and France as a key point in the decision to recognize the EU.

"Over a seventy-year period, Germany and France had fought three wars," he said. "Today, war between Germany and France is unthinkable."

Conditions of democracy placed on countries such as Greece, Spain and Portugal before they were allowed to join the EU, and the opportunities for EU membership afforded to Central and Eastern European countries after the fall of the Berlin Wall, were also highlighted in the EU's track record.

The committee also illustrated the EU's continued commitment to democracy with the admission of Croatia as a member next year, and the discussion of membership for Turkey, which "has also advanced democracy and human rights in that country."

Martin Schulz, the president of the European Parliament, said on Twitter that he was "deeply touched and honored" that the EU had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fifty years ago, with the end of the last world war, the Europeans saw what the USA did and emulated it. It has become the European Union. After the war, they postulated, "What if we took many of the countries of Europe, ones who have warred with each other since the beginning of recorded civilization, and we unified them? We will take away the borders and give them one currency." They were laughed at! Yet today, you're seeing it.

Today, their monetary system is more valuable than yours! Where am I going with this? Listen - here is an attribute, a postulate, an axiom of this new earth energy: Separatism kills. Unity is the survival of humanity. You will start putting things together and not taking them apart. And the more you put them together, the more you will unify. Then slowly you'll realize that the goal is to put things together, not tear them apart. What has the European Union created? I'll tell you. It isn't the Euro. It has created a group of countries that will never go to war with each other again! They can't. They trade with each other. Think about it. That's what we're talking about. …“

Europe

Let's talk about Europe - Eastern and Western Europe. Look at the history. I want you to look at the history of the Europeans. What do you know about them? What did you study in school about them, American? You had to learn all those dates and facts. You sit in a country that's barely 200 years old and you had to memorize all the battles and all those conquerors and all those army specifics for hundreds of years! Fourteen hundreds, 1300s - all the way to the present century they seemed to be conquering each other on a regular basis. They warred with each other like the tides of the ocean, constant and predictable. When they got tired of that, they conquered other continents. The small country of Spain alone is responsible for conquering all of South America, middle America and well up into North America. Millions today are speaking their language who never did before they arrived.

The armies of Napoleon spread across parts of Europe like water flowing in a river, conquering everything in its path. There are some cities today in Europe that still don't know which country they belong to! This is because their borders kept changing so often! Now, that's history. I want you to look at it carefully. Still, there would be those who say, "This is just what men do. They create borders and cultures and they go to war. That's Human nature."

Fifty years ago, this new energy started to arrive. Oh, the alignments go slow, dear Human Being, but it was here. It was starting; it was beginning. Fifty years ago, something happened in Europe and you didn't hear much about it back then. Some very clear thinkers got together after World War II and said, "If we don't do something different and out of the box of today's thinking, it's all going to happen again because this is what we do. Men make war." Even the young country called America was involved in war. America itself almost split apart before that, because that's what men do. They split good things apart. It was obvious to these wise men that they could try something, something that might work - a uniting instead of separation. And so they formed an idea. Let me tell you what it was.

They said to themselves, "What if we could get as many countries as we can to agree to become a collection of 'country states'? If we start this now and go at it slowly, we could eventually have a system where we would trade together to the point where the borders come down, no checkpoints and no passports. All these cultures and former enemy countries would all trade evenly together, and for that to happen we might even have a common currency. Look at the United States, for this is how it works there. Europe would never go to war with itself again. It couldn't, since it would be allied financially."

Of course, they were laughed at! Everyone who heard it said it couldn't' be done and that there were just too many issues to solve. Those who objected said, "No, no, no. That's not what we do. We have too many different cultures. There's some with strong currencies, there's some with weak currencies. There are too many objections. Imagine going from one country to another without being inspected at the border? That won't work. Who are you to suggest something of this nature?" And the forward thinkers said, "We are unifiers. And we think it's a good idea so we will have strength and will never war again." That was two generations ago, 50 years.

Today, you have the European Union of States. There are more all the time, way past the original number of countries. Some are "standing in line" to be accepted! The borders are gone and the checkpoints are missing and the currency called the Euro is the strongest currency on Earth - stronger even than yours [the USA]. Now, let me tell you what did that. It's a consciousness shift that even 50 years ago was developing. Through two generations, it slowly allowed for free thinkers to unify things that had never been unified before. The result? These countries will never conquer each other again, because "history" ended at that moment. They started a new paradigm for Europe and one that has no historic profile known to man. The old history of the area is gone, and it will not repeat itself.

Those in the old Eastern Bloc of Europe, where there is still to this day very little unity, will still say, "History will again repeat itself. We are victims of it. It's only a matter of time." But not all of them feel this way. There are some who are starting to feel a unity of spirituality within their own cultures that they were never allowed to speak of before. So they are free thinking, out of the box of the old paradigm. It's new.

There are those who are standing on podiums and in pulpits and are proclaiming, "History is ended. It's the end of suffering. It's the end of dictatorships. It's the end of those who would put us in a low place. Instead, it's the beginning of discovering who we are." And although they don't say it in these exact words, they are discovering the creator inside - that which is the unity of God. So it's a full circle back to what the Angel told Muhammad, isn't it? UN Aims to End Child Marriage by 2030

Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu said Thursday he is as committed to abolishing child marriage around the globe as he was to fighting apartheid in South Africa.

Tutu made his remarks at the launch of UN campaign to end child marriage by 2030, in a bid to free girls from poverty, ignorance and oppression at the hands of their husbands.

The UN Population Fund says about 37,000 girls under age 18 are being married off daily, at a pace rising toward 14.2 million a year by 2020, and 15.1 million a year by 2030, if the trend is not curbed.

"I give my commitment to work for the abolition of child marriage. That commitment is my dream, and I want it to be equal to the commitment that I had when I fought against apartheid," said Tutu who is one of the group of "Elders" who advise the UN and governments on social problems.

The UN agency said the problem is mainly concentrated in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, where girls as young as 5 or 6 are married off, but its study, "Marrying Too Young," focused on the developing world, and did not include statistics on child marriage in China, Russia, Western Europe, Canada or the United States.

The UN Population Fund's executive director, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, called for all nations to set a mandatory marriage age of 18.

Many US states allow children of 16 or 17 to marry with parental permission or a court order; some allow marriage at 15 or 14 in special circumstances.

In South Asia, 46 percent of women aged 20-24 had married before they were 18, the UN study found. In Bangladesh, the rate was 66 percent.

In sub-Saharan Africa, 37 percent of women aged 20-24 had married before they were 18, the study found. Niger had the highest rate, at 77 percent.

Girls under 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their 20s, and girls age 15-18 are twice as likely to die, the U.N. study found. The children of girl brides are 60 percent more likely to die by their first birthday than children with mothers over age 19.

"Let us help those who are already married to lead more fulfilling lives. All members of society will benefit when we let girls be girls, not brides," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

"By 2020, 142 million innocent young girls worldwide will be separated from their friends and family, deprived of an education and put in harm's way because of child marriage," Ban said, adding that young girls are unable to safely bear pregnancies, and their newborns are at risk of low birth weight.

In Washington, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took time out to observe the launch of the UN's first "International Day of the Girl Child."
