Canada has granted asylum to a woman who helped Edward Snowden hide in Hong Kong after his leaks exposed US global surveillance programs, a refugee rights association said Monday.

Vanessa Rodel and her 7-year-old daughter Keana were scheduled to arrive in Toronto later Monday on a flight from Hong Kong, the non-profit organization For the Refugees said.

Rodel was among a group of people who sheltered Snowden, a former CIA employee and US National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, putting him up in her apartment in 2013 while he was in Hong Kong on the run from US authorities.

His leaks of highly classified documents revealed the existence of global surveillance programs run by the NSA in cooperation with partners Australia, Britain and Canada.

Snowden, who now lives in Russia, was charged in June 2013 in the United States with espionage and stealing state secrets.

Canada granted Rodel, a Philippines national, and her daughter asylum in January but it was kept secret for security reasons, according to For the Refugees.

Five other people who helped Snowden have also requested asylum but remain in Hong Kong awaiting a response, according to the daily National Post.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined to comment, saying it would be inappropriate to do so in "a situation regarding a specific case."

But Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland implicitly confirmed the report, telling reporters she had not personally intervened in the process.

Asked during a Washington visit whether the granting of asylum might harm US-Canadian relations, Freeland told reporters that Ottawa based its decision on case-by-case considerations, not "geopolitical relations."

A spokesperson for Canada's immigration ministry also declined to comment except to say that in "exceptional circumstances" requests for asylum can be accelerated.

Radio Canada said Rodel was under pressure from Hong Kong authorities and faced a risk of deportation to the Philippines.

Washington (AFP) - FBI chief James Comey dealt Donald Trump a double blow Monday by confirming a probe into his election campaign's links to Russia last year while repudiating the president's claim that he was wiretapped by Barack Obama.

In a high-stakes public hearing televised live from the US Congress, Comey took the extraordinary step of confirming that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating whether Trump campaign aides colluded with a Russian effort to influence the 2016 election.

Comey's bombshell statement undercut a White House effort to dismiss the controversy stalking Trump's young administration -- with the president once more dismissing talk of his team's ties to Russia as "FAKE NEWS" as the hearing got underway.

The FBI chief refused to answer the questions of the House Intelligence Committee about exactly what and who its probe involves, citing the need to protect a sensitive, ongoing counterintelligence investigation.

But he confirmed to lawmakers that it "includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts."

And in a second setback for the Republican president, Comey firmly shot down his tweeted allegation earlier this month that his predecessor ordered a wiretap on Trump Tower, the real estate mogul's Manhattan residence and office.

"The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components. The department has no information that supports those tweets," he told the hearing.

Putin's 'clear preference'

At least four separate congressional investigations are underway into Moscow's election meddling, which US intelligence chiefs said in January was directed by President Vladimir Putin and aimed to boost Trump's campaign over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Democrats argue that the interference, in which Russian actors allegedly stole Democratic documents and communications and released them through WikiLeaks, contributed to frontrunner Clinton's defeat.

Confirming longstanding reports that his agency is probing a Russian effort to steer last year's vote, Comey dated the probe back to July last year, when the government became aware of the Democratic party hack.

Until Monday only a small group of legislators has been briefed in secret on this issue by US intelligence and law enforcement, and the public had not heard directly from them.

Comey and Admiral Mike Rogers, director of the National Security Administration, confirmed that they believed Moscow aimed to hurt Clinton's campaign and support Trump.

"Putin hated Secretary Clinton so much that the flip side of that coin was he had a clear preference to the person running against the person he hated so much," Comey said.

"They wanted to hurt our democracy, hurt her, help him. I think, all three, we were confident in at least as early as December," he said.

'Nothing has changed'

But Comey's unwillingness to comment on specifics, or on unproven media reports of Trump aides' contacts with Russian intelligence, gave the White House room to defend its position -- which is that the entire controversy was manufactured by opponents to undermine Trump's presidency.

As he testified, a senior administration official said in a written statement: "There is NO EVIDENCE of Trump-Russia collusion and there is NO EVIDENCE of a Trump-Russia scandal."

Later, Trump spokesman Sean Spicer told journalists: "Following this testimony it's clear nothing has changed. Senior intelligence officials have gone on record to say there is no evidence of a Trump/Russia collusion."

"Investigating and having proof are different thing," he added.

Likewise -- in spite of Comey's straightforward rejection of Trump's wiretapping allegations -- the White House continued to cling to those claims.

Asked if Trump would withdraw the accusation and apologize to Obama, Spicer said that investigations are "still ongoing" into the issue.

Independent probe sought

Monday's hearing made clear the question of Russian interference in the election will continue to trouble the Trump administration.

Both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees will hold more public hearings in the coming weeks, as well as closed-door sessions with Comey, Rogers and other intelligence chiefs to discuss classified information on the probes.

But Democrats have expressed concerns that the White House and Republicans would like to stifle the issue, and are calling for an independent probe.

"I believe that we would benefit from the work of an independent commission that can devote the staff and resources to this investigation that we do not have, and that can be completely removed from any political considerations," said Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

What a coincidence! Forty-five is a nine. A nine and a nine together are more than significant. They tell a story about what is happening. I will tell you something else. This story is not finished yet and there is more coming. You don’t know what you don’t know, so don’t make up your mind in advance about any outcomes. You’re from another planet, remember? There’s no emotion, no bias, no politics and nothing to judge. Look at it for what it is.

A big stick has just been inserted into what is normal and it’s going to be turned. As the big stick turns, other things will respond that never would have responded otherwise. I wish to tell you, dear one, old soul, relax with upcoming wild cards. They do what they do on purpose so that you will have a better civilization in the future. Sometimes they show you what won’t work, and sometimes they change paradigms that would have never changed otherwise. But what you have now is a profound wild card. That is the message.

It’s so common for you to respond certain ways when you are invested in the process. The knee-jerk reaction is expected or you wouldn’t be a Human. However, for this lesson, you’re from another planet and you’re looking down and you’re seeing it. Pretend.

Isn’t that interesting about a nine and a nine together? It means that truly the end of something is here. Perhaps it’s the end of the old way things were done? Perhaps it’s a shake-up of the system so it can correct itself? Don’t dare make up your mind where it’s going, because it’s not finished yet. However, wait a moment. Did you also realize that 2017 is a “one” year? Not only is the energy one of completion with a double nine, but it moves into “a new beginning” (the definition of a one in numerology).

I have more to tell you about numerology, and also something that will be clearer about this whole situation. I will give this to you in the next channelling.

Can you relax in the face of uncertainty when it’s your own country? Can you relax in the face of not knowing what’s next? When you’re so involved, can you disengage from either side of the fray? That is the test of a Lightworker.

There’s something else coming. Dear ones, this is beautiful. No matter what you think and no matter what your reaction is to this channelling, what is happening is correct for your time and needed for your immediate future. I will speak of this later. The beauty is when you step away and see how grand it is, that Spirit cares enough that it would allow a big stick to occur that would stir your complacency at this time. The real reason? The shift is here.

How do you feel? I want you to relax and smile at what the shift has brought you. For those of you who felt all the “shift talk” was nonsense, this may be your wake-up call. It’s real. Here it comes.

The 1.3 million circulation newspaper covered its front page with a strongly worded editorial calling for the US to restrict firearms. Appeal follows the San Bernardino killings, the deadliest mass shooting since 2012.

"The New York Times," in its first front-page editorial in nearly a century, called for outlawing the kinds of rifles used in the southern California shooting massacre this week that left 14 people dead.

The Saturday editorial entitled "End the Gun Epidemic in America" wades straight into the US national debate over access to firearms saying that political leaders were failing to protect the citizenry from the near-daily occurrence of mass shootings.

"It is a moral outrage and a national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency," reads the editorial.

The front page editorial comes three days after Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple, carried out the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, with legally purchased .223 caliber assault rifles.

"Certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership," the editorial said.

The paper's publisher, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., said the reason for running the editorial on the front page was to "to deliver a strong and visible statement of frustration and anguish about our country's inability to come to terms with the scourge of guns," he said in a statement. "Even in this digital age, the front page remains an incredibly strong and powerful way to surface issues that demand attention."

FBI officials have said they are investigating the shooting as an act of terrorism. That's appropriate, the editorial said, but it added that "the attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher premium on the money and political power of an industry dedicated to profiting from the unfettered spread of ever more powerful firearms."

Federal authorities say that the two assault rifles and two handguns used in the
San Bernardino massacre were all purchased legally in the United States.

Polarizing debate over intent of 18th century legal doctrines

The debate over gun control has long been one of the most contentious political debates in the United States, with the right to firearms ownership enshrined in the US Constitution's Second Amendment.

In a post on the website of the libertarian magazine "Reason," the newspaper was criticized for suggesting the federal government could ever hope to disarm its citizens as there are literally millions of weapons in circulation.

"What the Times is calling for is, beyond its countable costs in money and effort and the likely further erosion of civil liberties, also (as they surely know) calling for a massive political civil war the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time," senior editor Brian Doherty wrote.

US President Barack Obama, a Democrat, has appealed for legislation to make it harder for criminals to buy guns. He has noted mass shootings do not happen as frequently in other advanced countries and said the United States must address this problem.

But Republicans, who hold majorities in both houses of US Congress, and some Democrats - have long mounted heavy opposition to gun control measures. A day after the San Bernardino massacre a measure to increase background checks for prospective gun buyers was blocked by Republicans in the US Senate.

Historical footnote

The last time the New York Times ran an editorial on its front page was July 13, 1920. In it, the paper roundly criticized the Republican Party for nominating Warren G. Harding as the presidential candidate. Harding went on to win the general election later that year.

Humans will begin to search for integrity and fairness and it's going to happen in the places you never expect. I said this last week, so this is a review. Gauck meets with Obama at the White House

US President Barack Obama has met with German President Joachim Gauck at the White House. The German head of state called for the US to be engaged in addressing the influx of Syrian refugees into Europe.

The former pastor from East Germany, whose visit to the United States coincided with the 25th anniversary of German reunification , made the first visit to the Oval Office by a German president in 18 years on Wednesday.

The visit and meeting between presidents Joachim Gauck, whose role is largely ceremonial, and Barack Obama, aimed to reaffirm the US-German relationship . Still, DW United States correspondent Richard Walker said the pair touched on the world's major geopolitical crises during their hour-long talk.

Gauck and Obama discussed Germany's role in the current refugee crisis as well as the dangers of populism and xenophobia. Obama was reported to have praised Germany's willingness to take in refugees, calling the country a role model. He also praised Gauck personally for his role as a pro-democracy activist in the former East Germany.

"Germany because of its history is ready to welcome these people in dire need," Gauck said of those fleeing in their hundreds of thousands to Europe, adding there was a need to find a solution to help people fleeing for their lives from the Syrian war but also to address the root causes of that conflict.

"We are very much aware that this is a major humanitarian challenge that we have to address," Gauck added. "My hope would be, my wish would be, that awareness does not only exist in Europe, but it's also something that is recognized in the United States of America."

Gauck and Obama also talked about the dangers of political instability within Germany posed by the migration crisis, DW's Richard Walker said.

More than half a million people have crossed the Mediterranean by boat so far this year attempting to flee conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East - including the Syrian war. European authorities have been struggling to regulate the arrivals of people and provide them humanitarian care. Germany expects to receive some 800,000 asylum applications this year alone.

The United States has taken in about 1,500 Syrian refugees over the past four years. In September, Obama pledged to admit 10,000 refugees from Syria in the following year. That same month US Secretary of State John Kerry announced the US would increase the number of refugees from around the world it accepts for resettlement, from the current 70,000 per year to 85,000 in the 2016 fiscal year and 100,000 by 2017.

The White House has also asked the crowdfunding website Kickstarter to launch a campaign to raise money for the United Nations' refugee agency to provide aid to displaced Syrians.

Obama praised Germany's role as "one of our strongest allies," mentioning the country's role in negotiations on the Ukraine conflict and Iran nuclear deal. According to Walker, Obama and Gauck also discussed issues like the NSA spying scandal , which has at times strained relations between the two allied nations.

Obama and Rousseff take climate focus, turn page on spy row

The leaders of Brazil and the US have pledged to work towards visa-free travel and increased use of renewable energy. Brazil's Dilma Rousseff labeled the talks a "relaunch" of relations following the NSA spying scandal.

US President Barack Obama and his Brazilian counterpart, Dilma Rousseff, announced "ambitious" plans to increase use of renewable energy and reduce deforestation, at joint press conference in Washington on Tuesday.

Both countries aim for one-fifth of their energy consumption to be supplied from renewable sources by 2030.

"These are very ambitious goals, a near tripling for the United States and more than double Brazil's current output," said Obama.

The leaders hope to present a collective front at UN-sponsored climate talks in Paris in late November and December.

The heads of state also discussed trade and defense cooperation, and agreed to take steps so that Americans and Brazilians can travel between the two countries without visas.

Turning the page on the spy row

The diplomatic trip, which started Monday, was originally planned for 2013. However, it was delayed when documents released by Edward Snowden showed that the US National Security Agency had tapped Rousseff's telephone calls and those of millions of other Brazilians.

On Tuesday, Rousseff called the visit a "relaunch" of relations between Washington and Brasilia, following a bitter row.

"Since then, some things have changed," she said, citing assurances that the US would no longer spy on leaders in allied countries. "I believe President Obama," Rousseff added.

"He has told me that, should he ever need non-public information about Brazil, he would just pick up the phone and call me."

Rousseff also praised the American president over the thaw in relations with Cuba, saying the rapprochement improved US standing across Latin America.

In turn, Obama hailed Brazil as a "global player" and pointed to good relations with Rousseff.

"I trust her completely," Obama said. "She's always been very candid and frank with me about the interests of the Brazilian people and how we can work together. She's delivered on what she's promised."

After Washington, Rousseff will be heading to Silicon Valley to meet with executives at Google, Apple and Facebook.

US domestic surveillance in limbo after Senate vote

US domestic surveillance programs involving the mass collection of data on private telephone calls face an uncertain future after two votes in the Senate. Debate is to continue later this month.

The US Senate rejected legislation early Saturday to reform the way domestic spy agencies collect vast amount of data on Americans' telephone calls, in a blow to President Barack Obama.

The so-called USA Freedom Act, which passed easily in the House of Representatives last week, fell three votes short of the 60 votes necessary for it to advance.

The bill, strongly backed by Obama, would have ended the bulk collection of phone data, replacing it with a more targeted system in which case-by-case authorization would have been given to search records held by phone companies rather than government authorities.

In another vote, the Senate also blocked legislation that would have extended by two months provisions of the USA Patriot Act allowing the mass collection of telephone records. The provisions expire on June 1.

Programs in jeopardy

The votes means further uncertainty on the future of the US surveillance programs, which many Americans see as infringing on their civil liberties, while intelligence agencies consider them as essential in the battle against terrorism.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, speaking after the votes, said the Senate would return to Washington on May 31 - cutting short its Memorial Day holiday break by one day - to debate ways of preventing the expiry of the surveillance measures.

"We'll have a week to discuss it. We'll have one day to do it. But we better be ready next Sunday afternoon to prevent the country from being in danger by the total expiration of the program that we're all familiar with," he said.

Offers to extend the Patriot Act provisions into the first week of June were also rejected.

"Our forefathers would be aghast" at the amount of spying done on Americans, said Senator Rand Paul, a Republican 2016 presidential candidate who has long-demanded an end to the telephone data dragnet.

The extent of the US domestic surveillance program was revealed in 2013 by former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, provoking outrage in some quarters that millions of private telephone records were being held.

The Patriot Act was passed in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks in a bid to increase national security.

Question (Sep 21, 2001): Lee, how could Kryon have been so wrong? He said there would be no war, and that all would be good in these end times?

Answer: Questions like this are uncommon, since most who follow the Kryon work know that this is not what Kryon said at all. For clarity, however, and for those who may have only read one book in the series, I wish to summarize what Kryon has told us of our future potentials.

First of all, Kryon told us twelve years ago in Kryon Book One, The End Times, that we had changed the paradigm of the future on earth. We had voided the Armageddon as prophesied, and were headed toward the potential of a new consciousness on the planet… one of great promise. He indicated that the magnetic grid of earth would change to accommodate our new abilities (it did) and he told us that all the wars in these times would be tribal (they seem to be). Then he said that up to one percent of earth’s population might have to leave to accomplish all this (hardly a feel-good fact! - page 97). Do you remember this statement on page 101 regarding the future? “… many will terminate and return with new powers. Also, the transition to this new age of self determination and power will be filled with changes. Things will not remain the same for any of you…” He also gave us a date of 1999 where we might have an unbalanced leader creating chaos (page 23) This could have been Bosnia, or the beginning of what just happened. All of this was given within the first Kryon book, over a decade ago.

Indeed, communism fell over all by itself in the late 1980’s and there was no nuclear war. The time-line for the Armageddon as prophesied, passed, and many were aware that we were headed in a new direction – one that nobody had foreseen.

As the Kryon books unfolded into the new millennium, he gave us a great deal of personal information and methods for finding the divinity within ourselves. He always indicated that peace on earth began with individual work, and gave us invitations to change our DNA. Within the books he told us of the profundity of the 11:11 many times, where Humans had given permission to change the end. Then came Book 8, Passing the Marker. As I have indicated before, Book 8 probably gave us more information about what we are experiencing than any other. He told us that there would be "no more fence sitting." (page 217). This meant that there could be no more "in between" attitudes regarding what was happening on the planet-that the old vs. the new would create this. Many would be "torn off the fence," he said. On Sunday September 30, 2001, both Colin Powell, the United States Secretary of State, and the King of Jordan, HM King Abdullah II, were interviewed at separate times. Both used the phrase, "Getting off the fence."

Kryon also indicated a "pull backwards" of apparent stability and peace, and even predicted the potential of the uprising of Israel in 2000 (page 182). He used the term "spiritual rage" for the first time, as well, and also told us that we were in for a Battle between the old and new. He said, "Don't be shocked and surprised if that war is not over. In fact, in some cases, the battle has just begun!" (page 183).

In August, a few weeks before the tragedy, the channelling in Vancouver was on world unity! Listen to what he said about the United States (to be published shortly in the Sedona Journal of Emergence). “The United States is currently in its greatest learning period.” Then for both Canada and the U.S., he said the following: “…There must be decisions. Things cannot remain the same. Honored are those who understand that changes which are important are afoot. The biggest changes in all of these places will be the old vs. the new. We’re here to tell you that the Human Being who sits here and who reads these words is the one who can change this. It cannot stand as it is. The potential for the most profound creative changes come in the year of the three.” (2001)

I personally feel that hints were given all along regarding the potentials of our 11:11. I received the facts below from many on the Internet who noticed the 11 synchronicity.

• The date of the attack: 9/11 - 9 + 1 + 1 = 11

• September 11th is the 254th day of the year: 2 + 5 + 4 = 11

• After September 11th there are 111 days left to the end of the year.

Coincidence? We must look at the numbers… always. Kryon has told us from

the beginning that the energy of the end times is the “9” and the “11.” This was given in the first book, (Book one), and the last released book (Book eight). It was about completion and permission. It’s now becoming clear what this all means. Remember this, as well: 666 =18 = 9. Could it be that what we are seeing was also prophesied in veiled ways in scripture? Remember that most scripture is written in metaphors. According to Gregg Braden, even the prophet Isaiah told us that we had the ability to change the future. I believe we just have.

Kryon has now indicated that through Human free choice, we have opted to advance the process of creating unity on the planet… that this tragedy will be seen in history as the turning point for planetary change. In this light, therefore, we see a glimpse of how heretofore unthinkable things might happen—that nations might agree to come together and form coalitions to agree on what “civilization on earth” will permit and not permit—that millions may have just been “torn off the fence” through spiritual rage, and that they will have to decide one way or the other what energy they are going to join or not join.

This is what Kryon spoke of time and time again, and it has been published for

all to read. Now that it begins, and is of our own creation and free will, it will allow for that elusive phrase to come about… the eventual creation of “The New Jerusalem.” Kryon also said these words over and over: “As go the Jews, go Earth.” Perhaps we are beginning to see how this all fits?

What’s next? We still have free choice. Suddenly, however, we must decide to either wallow in the old ways, or clean up our earthly act. We have until 2012, according to Kryon. Whatever our energy then, will be our “stamp of intent” for Humanity.

I have said it before: Someday I will go home. When I do, I wish to have a meeting with almost 6,000 of our family who was lost this week. I want to tell them that what they did made a difference for hundreds of millions on earth, for their future children, and for the Universe. Then I want to hug each one and sing a hero’s song… one with lyrics about the 11:11… the day that Humans decided what they really wanted on earth, and took control to create it.

Americans freed by North Korea arrive in US

The plane carrying Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller touched down at around 9:00 pm (0500 GMT) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington State, following a secret mission by US intelligence chief James Clapper to secure their freedom.

Bae, a Korean-American missionary who has served two years in prison, expressed thanks to those who had been "supporting me and lifting me up and not forgetting me."

The men disembarked the US government jet with shaved heads and carrying luggage, then embraced family and friends on the tarmac.

North Korea's surprise release of Bae and Miller followed the equally unexpected decision by Pyongyang last month to free 56-year-old US national Jeffrey Fowle.

In a brief press conference, Bae said he was also grateful to those "supporting my family as well during this tremendous difficult time," and asked for supporters to not forget "the people of North Korea."

President Barack Obama hailed the latest releases as "wonderful," as State Department officials said there had been no "quid pro quo" deal with North Korea to secure Bae and Miller's freedom.

US Director of National Intelligence Clapper traveled to North Korea and "engaged on behalf of the United States in discussions with DPRK authorities about the release of two citizens," a State Department statement said.

A senior administration official said Clapper carried a "brief message" from Obama to North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un indicating he was his personal envoy to bring the Americans home.

"It was a skillful move on the part of the administration," former US envoy to the United Nations Bill Richardson, who negotiated with the North in the past, told CNN.

Obama, speaking just hours before leaving for a tour of Asia, praised Clapper's role in the "challenging" mission.

"I think it is a wonderful day for them and their families and obviously we are very grateful for their safe return," he said.

Former basketball player Dennis Rodman, who has talked up his cozy relationship with Kim, claimed his trips to the country had triggered Bae's release.

"I understand the crimes (Bae) committed, and ask you my dear friend, the highly respected Marshall Kim Jong-Un for his release to show my country how loving and compassionate you and the DPRK can be," Rodman wrote in a letter to the leader in January released by celebrity website TMZ.

Bae marked the two-year anniversary of his detention this week.

The sickly 46-year-old said Saturday he is "recovering at this time" when asked about his health.

Bae was arrested in November 2012 and sentenced to 15 years' hard labor.

His sister Terri Chung expressed joy at her brother's release.

"We finally are here. My brother is home. All of our hopes and prayers for this moment have finally come true," she said, speaking before Bae took to the podium.

"We're thankful that God never abandoned us even though the last years have been a journey that we wouldn't wish on anybody -- even when it seemed like there was no hope."

She said the family were also thankful "for the mercy of leaders in North Korea."

Bae was born in South Korea and his family came to the United States in 1985, his sister said.

Miller, 24, had been sentenced to six years' hard labor by the North Korean Supreme Court following his arrest in April, after he allegedly ripped up his visa at immigration and demanded asylum.

Washington had condemned Pyongyang over the detentions, saying the Americans were held as political hostages to extract diplomatic concessions.

Nuclear program

North Korea has expressed interest in the past in reviving six-party talks with the US and others about its nuclear program, but Washington insists Pyongyang must first show a tangible commitment to de-nuclearization.

A State Department official insisted the release of Bae and Miller did not reflect a shift in posture over the mothballed nuclear negotiations.

"North Korea knows what it needs to do if it wants a better relationship with the international community and wants to end its isolation and pariah status," the official told AFP.

"North Korea must show it is serious and prepared to abide by its commitments, particularly concerning denuclearization. And they must take significant steps to improve their human rights record.

"The release of our citizens is unrelated."

As recently as Tuesday, North Korea was maintaining its defiant stance, ruling out dialogue with the United States about its nuclear program and human rights record and accusing the US of trying to destroy its system.

The North "will never allow any human rights dialogue or nuclear one with the enemy keen to overthrow it," a foreign ministry spokesman said through the official Korean Central News Agency.
