JAKARTA (Antara): President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered the manpower and foreign affairs ministries to arrange the repatriation of the body of Indonesian maid Yanti Irianti from Saudi Arabia, where she was executed last Saturday for murder.
Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno said Wednesday the government had submitted a request to the Saudi Arabian government asking to pardon Yanti, but it was turned down.
Earlier in the day, Yanti's husband, Gino, and his two children came from Cianjur, West Java, to the ministry, hoping to be able to meet with the President.
"I'm here to ask the government to bring back the remains of my wife. I also demand the government fulfills the rights of my wife," he said.
Gino, who received a total of US$4,500 in compensation from his wife's insurance company, said the government had failed to inform him of Yanti's execution and that he had only found out about it through the news on TV.
Gino also received another $1,500 from the labor company sending her wife to Saudi Arabia and Rp 10 million ($1,058) from the manpower ministry.
Yanti was executed after being convicted for killing her employer and stealing her gold jewelry. (lva)
